The Perfect Autumn Picnic
By Brooke Harrington
Most people think of summer as the best “picnic season”, but I have to disagree. There is something about the crisp fall breeze, the smell of harvest in the air, crunching leaves rustling around, and a sunset hue cast upon the trees that really makes an autumn picnic standout. For the perfect fall-inspired picnic in Montclair, I have a few tips. Whether it’s a date, spending some time with a best friend, or even a family outing - a picnic is a great way to enjoy the company of people who bring out the warmth in us.
The first thing needed for a picnic is a beautiful spot. Personally, my last Montclair picnic was at the Presby Iris Gardens. Here there are benches, little paths to walk through, an open field for laying down in, and picnic tables. You can choose to go old fashion style and put down a flannel blanket in the field or at the base of a tree, or picnic under the sky at one of the many picnic tables! The thing I liked about picnic-ing here was the view. Being a little bit on the hill allowed you to take in the area, a wide-open sky with trees around to watch the red and orange leaves flutter to the ground. Other parks that could be great for a picnic are Anderson, Brookdale, Verona, and Nishuane. (Pro-tip: Bring along a football to have a nice catch in the field - it’s not fall without this sport!)
Now, it’s not a picnic without some things to munch on. For a Parisian style spread: pick up a few kinds of cheese, some crackers or fresh bread, a few fruits or sweets for balance, and some meats. A charcuterie board is a great snack and really draws in the romance and colors of the fall season. Some cheese suggestions (courtesy of the most recent cheese board I’ve eaten from) are smoked Gouda, pepper jack, Vermont seriously sharp cheddar, and provolone. To make it a charcuterie, pick up a package of prosciutto and soppressata. Finally, add grapes for a sweet touch. To make it autumnal, add a few cute tiny pumpkins or gourds! For an easier setup, pick up some Jersey-style Italian sandwiches from local delis such as Belgiovine, Nicolo’s, or Sparo’s.
Now for the romance - be sure to pack some wine glasses and bring along a nice bottle of vino. You can find a great selection of wines at Amanti Vino, or pick up a six-pack of your favorite Montclair Brewery beers! Another harvest season drink is the PSL. Any pumpkin-flavored coffee or chai latte is sure to bring the fall flavor to your tastebuds.
Now that you are picnic prepared, sit back, relax, and enjoy the changing of the seasons. We are lucky to live in an area that captures so much of earth's many different beauties. Winter is coming, so enjoy the outdoors while you can!
