If the thought of a new school year is giving you slight anxiety, you’re not alone. We don’t know what lies ahead for us this school year, but there’s no denying our Montclair kids will need some back to school supplies. While it’s easy to buy from a big box store with one click, shopping locally has so many benefits. Challenge yourself: aim for a 50-50 local/online split to spread your dollars around.

For a one-stop shop with everything from backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and more, Montclair Stationary on Valley Road is a well-loved family favorite. Bet you’ll be nostalgic as you roam the aisles; they’re jam-packed with nearly every school supply one could need. Then take a quick walk down to CVS or head to Pink Bungalow to add flair with decorative pens and notebooks. For older kids craving a new backpack, check out Giftbar’s trendy options and if you’re already picking up a prescription or candy, keep Grove Pharmacy in mind for last-minute back to school additions.
Many of our local schools sponsor fundraisers to purchase grade or class-specific school supplies. It’s a great choice since it’ll save you time, the gear gets shipped directly to you, and your kid’s school will benefit. Go the fundraiser route for the paper goods and then shop local for what your kiddo can pick, like a new lunchbox, thermos, or backpack.
No denying that the pandemic has been stressful on families. Heading back to school is a change in routine, lifestyle, and daily schedules. Be aware of how these changes will affect you and your family. Give everyone some patience and extra awareness during this stressful time of year. There are many local resources that can help families financially and emotionally as we head into the school year. If your child seems to be struggling academically, speak to your child’s teacher, principal, and seek out help so your kiddo is supported from the start.

While the actual school day may bring about some mixed feelings in your household, the prospect of fun after-school activities should only bring about joy and excitement. The choices in Montclair are enviable and can be head spinning, with everything from dance, soccer, drama, music, rock-climbing, nature and martial arts, art, and so much more. To keep your sanity, try to limit one activity per day per kid, keep one or two afternoons free for homework or playdates, and sign up with a friend for a carpool buddy.
Now that back to school is upon us, get ready for excitement, stress, and joy of kids out of the house. A wonderful way to treat yourself once you make it through the first week back to school is take out! We all know Montclair has so many delicious choices from pizza, sushi, Thai, BBQ, and everything in between. Let someone else cook dinner so you can chat with your kids all about the start of school.
